Fraud: Man defrauds client of N120m using Opay and Moniepoint

Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended Glory Samuel, 34, for allegedly defrauding a businessman of N120 million using Opay and Moniepoint.

The arrest follows a complaint filed on April 1, 2024, reporting suspicious withdrawals totalling N2,068,000 from the complainant’s company bank account, as disclosed by Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil on Wednesday.

Prompted by directives from Commissioner of Police Auwal Mohammed, the State Intelligence Department swiftly investigated the case.

Their inquiry revealed Samuel’s involvement in unlawfully withdrawing the substantial sum via financial apps, including Opay and Moniepoint.

During interrogation, Samuel confessed to exploiting the trust of a longtime business neighbor, with whom he shared a market space for over 15 years.

He detailed how an acquaintance from Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, where he studied Computer Science before dropping out, convinced him to facilitate unauthorized access to a wealthy individual’s phone.

This enabled the installation of financial applications without the victim’s consent, facilitating fraudulent transactions.

The incident has raised concerns about the security measures of digital payment platforms like Opay and Moniepoint, highlighting vulnerabilities that criminals exploit.

Stakeholders emphasized the need for enhanced security protocols and user awareness to prevent such fraudulent activities.
