Lagos plans lay-bys to solve traffic congestion

The Lagos State Government says there is a need to construct multiple lay-bys to decongest traffic in the Ketu area of the state.

At a stakeholders’ meeting with Ketu residents on Tuesday at Ketu bus stop, the Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Anofiu Elegushi, said the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had approved the construction of the lay-bys.

Elegushi said the Ambode-led administration had been revamping the transport sector, which had led to the construction of lay-bys at Oworoshoki, Car Wash, Ogudu, and Berger, while a slip road was constructed at Estate bus stop.

The commissioner explained that the government was committed to decongesting traffic across the state, adding that to solve the pathetic traffic situation in Ketu, construction of multiple lay-bys was imperative.

He said, “In most cases, gridlock at Ketu bus stop during peak hours normally starts at Ojota and stretches to the bus stop. Commercial buses parking on the road often cause the traffic.

“We will continue to free traffic on the Ikorodu corridor and other areas and reduce travel time. The government is also considering constructing another pedestrian bridge at Ketu bus stop.”

The Ketu monarch, Ona Oyero, commended the government for the project. He also appealed to the government to address the issue of unemployment through youth empowerment programmes.
