Ladi Adebutu stands firm for peace in Nigerian politics
In a solemn address during an event marking the 92nd remembrance anniversary of his great-grandfather, Pa Alimi Adebutu, Ladi Adebutu, the former gubernatorial candidate of the Osun Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made a striking declaration: “I believe in life after death.”
This profound statement served as the cornerstone of Adebutu’s message, conveying his deep-rooted principles amidst the political landscape of Nigeria.
Adebutu’s assertion of his faith in an afterlife set the stage for a discourse on his approach to politics, particularly in light of the 2023 elections.
“I believe in life after death, that is me. That is why you will see in the kind of politics that I play. You will never see violence, you will never see desperation, Adebutu said.
He revealed a conscious decision to uphold peace, despite alleged provocations, contrasting his stance with the prevalent desperation often observed in Nigerian politics.
Adebutu’s narrative centred on his restraint in the face of election-related violence, attributing such incidents to external influences while emphasizing his refusal to retaliate.
Following his reflection on the electoral process, Adebutu reiterated his commitment to ethical campaigning and peaceful coexistence, stressing the significance of civility in political discourse.
Drawing from the legacy of his great-grandfather, he underscored the enduring impact of community service and goodwill, exemplified by Pa Adebutu’s burial in Ijeun-Akoni, symbolizing a life dedicated to the betterment of society.
However, Adebutu’s advocacy for peace did not shield him from scrutiny, as the Ogun State APC spokesman, Tunde Oldunjoye, redirected attention to Adebutu’s ongoing trial for alleged vote-buying. This retort highlighted the complexities of Nigerian politics, where legal battles intertwine with broader discussions on ethics and conduct.
Adebutu’s narrative, anchored in his belief in a higher purpose, resonates beyond the confines of partisan politics, echoing the universal call for principled leadership and nonviolent engagement.
As Nigeria navigates its democratic journey, Adebutu’s words serve as a reminder of the enduring values that underpin a just and prosperous society.
