Kyle Walker cannot do it — Pep Guardiola
Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola has disclosed why Kyle Walker is no longer a regular player for the team. The defender has only started two out of the last seven games played by the Premier League champions.
Pep Guardiola has recently set up his team with John Stones playing as an auxiliary central midfielder. The tactic has been successful, but it has left Walker on the bench. Ahead of City’s clash against Southampton on Saturday, the coach revealed that the 32-year-old defender lacks the tactical skills required to play in Stones’ current role.
“To play inside, you have to make some movements, Kyle has other characteristics. With this shape of three at the back and two in the middle, he cannot do it. It’s a question of skills. In that position, he’ll need time, and we don’t have time,” Guardiola said.
Kyle Walker is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world, but he has struggled to adapt to the new tactical setup. Guardiola’s decision to use Stones in midfield has given City more control of the game, and the team has been able to dominate possession and create more scoring opportunities.
Guardiola’s comments suggest that Walker may have to adapt his game if he wants to regain his place in the starting lineup. The coach’s focus on tactics and technique is well known, and he has been successful in implementing his strategies with various teams.
Manchester City will face Southampton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, and Guardiola is expected to field a strong lineup, with Stones likely to play in midfield again. The team is currently at the top of the Premier League table, and a win against the Saints would further strengthen their position.
