Kano court stops dethroned Aminu Ado Bayero, four other from parading as Emirs

A Kano State High Court has permanently restrained Aminu Ado Bayero and four other dethroned Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from parading themselves as Emirs.

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, who presided over the case, delivered the judgment on Monday, prohibiting the Emirs, their servants, privies, and any appointees from assuming Emir titles.

The Kano State government had filed a suit requesting the court to bar the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the other four Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs. Following their deposition, the government also gave the former Emirs 48 hours to vacate their respective palaces.

However, Justice Aliyu ruled that the eviction issue for the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, from his Nassarawa palace falls under the jurisdiction of a Rent Tribunal and not her court.

In her judgment, she ordered the deposed Emirs to hand over all Emirate traditional royal artifacts to the government and the current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The judge also upheld the Kano State Assembly Emirate Council Repealed Law 2024, stating it was enacted according to the law as per Section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution. Additionally, she affirmed that the assent given by State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the law was constitutionally valid.
