"I snubbed Super Eagles invite for my own good" -- Jamilu Collins

Super Eagles defender, Jamilu Collins, has defended his choice to withdraw from Nigeria’s last two friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique, shedding light on his decision to prioritize his own fitness and well-being.

Initially, the left-back had been named in the 23-man squad for the friendlies by Nigeria’s head coach, Jose Peseiro. However, Collins was unable to honor the national team’s call-up due to concerns about his physical condition.

Speaking at a press conference in preparation for Cardiff City’s Sky Bet Championship clash against Swansea, the 29-year-old provided insights into his decision to withdraw from the squad.

Collins revealed, “Me not going to the national team was for my own self.”

He emphasized the importance of his own well-being and explained that he had been dealing with a persistent hamstring issue, prompting the advice from his club manager to prioritize rest and recovery.

Collins expressed his belief that the advice he received was the right one for him, acknowledging the necessity of taking time to recuperate and regain full fitness.

He also indicated a readiness to showcase his skills on the field and hoped that his performance would speak for itself, potentially earning him a place in the national team.

Collins concluded,

“I just play, and if the national team coach is impressed with the performance, he will stick with me.”
