"I am full of gratitude" -- Joel Matip reflects on his Liverpool exit

Joel Matip has shared his reflections and gratitude as he prepares to leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, following the expiry of his contract. The club confirmed earlier today that Matip will be among the players departing this summer.

Matip, who has been sidelined since December due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, leaves Liverpool after an impactful eight-year tenure.

Since joining the Reds on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in 2016, the central defender has made 201 appearances and played a pivotal role in securing major honors, including the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League titles.

Reflecting on his time at Anfield, Joel Matip expressed deep gratitude and affection for the club, his teammates, and the fans.

“It has been eight wonderful years here in Liverpool,” he said. “I was allowed to be part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club. We have achieved great titles and have the best fans in the world.”

Matip, who wore the No. 32 shirt, highlighted the warmth and support he and his family received during their time in Liverpool.

“I am full of gratitude for the wonderful time I was able to experience with these unique people supporting the club and the fans who love Liverpool FC,” he continued. “My wife and I have felt welcomed and supported from day one and together with the kids we had the best imaginable time here. We will always keep it in special memories.”

Joel Matip’s exit from Liverpool coincides with the departure of the manager who signed him to the club as Jurgen Klopp will also bow out come end of the season.
