How lightning killed three FRSC officials in Ogun

Three officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps attached to the Ogun State Sector Command were struck dead by lightning on Wednesday.

The officials were said to have been struck by lightning at their office in the old tollgate, Ilese, in the Ijebu North-East Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 10am when the victims were planning for the morning parade.

It was gathered  that there were more than 10 officers at the scene of the incident.

The Public Education Officer, Ogun State Sector Command, FRSC, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident.

Okpe, however, said the cause of death had yet to be ascertained.

She stated, “So we were informed, but my sector commander, Mr Ahmed Umar, has just gone there to find out what really happened.

“I cannot give any information until he comes back to brief us on what really happened. The sector commander is presently there in Ilese.

“When he comes back, he will tell us what really went wrong. I can’t just start talking, because we don’t really know what happened, whether it was lightning or something else.”

When our correspondent called Okpe back around 6pm, she said Umar had yet to come back from the scene of the incident.

She promised that the command would make its finding about the death of the officers known.

Residents of the area reportedly thronged the scene to get first-hand information on the incident.

It was gathered that personnel of the state’s special security outfit, OP MESA, had taken over the security of the area and dispersed the onlookers.

Also, traditional worshipers said to be Sango adherents were said to have been sighted at the scene to perform some rites on the corpses before releasing them to government officials for burial.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

Oyeyemi said the command had been briefed about the incident, which he described as unfortunate.

“This is unfortunate. The incident is a natural phenomenon. Our men will evacuate the corpses and they are also there to ensure the maintenance of law and order in the area,” he stated.
