Gary Neville picks out Manchester United player after defeat
Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has criticized Wout Weghorst, stating that the striker “lacks the quality” to play for the club. Neville made the comments in reaction to United’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Red Devils were condemned to the defeat at St James’ Park after second-half goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson. The result saw the Magpies leapfrog United into third place in the Premier League table.
Weghorst has scored just twice in 18 games for United and is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League. However, he has been credited with his pressing and hold-up play.
Against Newcastle, Weghorst was substituted off for Anthony Martial after an hour. Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said, “He does play his part. It’s a big issue. He doesn’t deserve to be criticized, I think he is doing his very best. He works as hard as he possibly can, but he just lacks the quality that a player in that position should have at Manchester United.”
Neville’s comments highlight the ongoing issue that United has faced in finding a consistent and reliable striker. Weghorst’s lack of goals and quality in front of goal has put him under scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
Despite the criticism, United fans will be hoping that Weghorst can find his form and start scoring goals for the club.
