Exclusive: Real Reason Obasa Withdrew Son From Agege Chairmanship Race

Facts have emerged on why Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, withdrew his son, Abdul-Ganiyu, from the race for Chairman of Agege Local Government Area.

Obasa, who had arm-twisted stakeholders in Agege to support his son, Abdul-Ganiyu, had earlier forced the main contender for the seat—Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, Oluwagbenga Abiola, popularly known as Agbelebu—to step down.

Abiola, a political protégé of the Speaker, said his decision to step down for the Speaker’s son was borne out of his loyalty to Obasa.

However, the tide has turned against Obasa and his son, as President Bola Tinubu has instructed him to tell his son to step down to avoid division in the state.

This has created another political imbroglio in Agege, as aspirants who stepped down for Abdul-Ganiyu will now have to re-enter the race—many of whom did not obtain nomination forms and have missed the deadline for the screening exercise.

Topnaija.ng can authoritatively report that Obasa’s son, Abdul-Ganiyu, missed the cressing exercise on Thursday.

The directive to step down followed a meeting with the President on Thursday in Abuja, ahead of the Lagos LG polls slated for July 12.

Topnaija.ng exclusively gathered from a reliable source who was part of the meeting in Abuja that the President also scolded Obasa for failing to withdraw his suit against Mojisola Meranda and the House of Assembly following his January 13 impeachment as Speaker.

The Lagos State House of Assembly was engulfed in crisis after Obasa’s impeachment by 28 members of the House on January 13, citing gross abuse of power, among other offences.

Following an intervention by Bola Tinubu—after failed mediation attempts by the highest decision-making organ of the APC in Lagos State, the GAC, and the Bisi Akande-led reconciliation team—Meranda was forced to step down, and the lawmakers reinstated Obasa as Speaker, against their will.
