Epic Games store launches on mobile, Fortnite returns to iOS

Epic Games has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of the Epic Games Store on mobile devices.

The app marketplace is now available on iOS in the European Union, following the bloc’s mandate requiring Apple to allow third-party app stores on iPhones and iPads.

Additionally, the store is accessible on Android devices worldwide. This development marks the return of Fortnite to iOS in the EU, allowing players to download the game directly without relying on cloud gaming services.

The launch comes three years after Epic’s 2020 clash with Apple and Google when the tech giants removed Fortnite from their stores after Epic attempted to bypass the standard revenue cut by directing players to purchase in-game currency directly from the publisher.

The legal battles that ensued are still ongoing. However, the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which came into effect this year, has opened the door for Fortnite’s return to iOS in the region.

In addition to Fortnite, the Epic Games Store is introducing other popular titles to mobile platforms. Fall Guys is now available on iOS and Android, nearly matching its console and PC versions, though the level-building creative mode is currently absent.

Rocket League Sideswipe, a mobile spin-off of Rocket League, is also available through the Epic store on both iOS and Android.

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney expressed gratitude to the European Commission for enabling the launch, stating, “The tide is turning, and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition. This is tangible progress for developers and consumers who can begin to benefit from competition and choice.”

Epic also plans to expand its mobile offerings through other third-party storefronts, starting with AltStore PAL and later extending to Aptoide’s iOS store in the EU and ONE Store on Android.

The rollout of the Epic Games Store on mobile is seen as a major step forward in the company’s ongoing efforts to challenge the dominance of Apple and Google in the mobile app market, offering gamers more options and developers a fairer revenue share.
