Minimum Wage Report: Labor unions plan meeting

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members to stage protests at the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) nationwide on Monday.

The NLC nationwide protest over the electricity tariff hike follows a decision made during a meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) on April 30, 2024.

In a statement signed by the Acting Secretary-General of the NLC, Chris Uyot, it was announced that the NLC nationwide protest over electricity tariff is scheduled for Monday, May 13, 2024.

The labour union had previously issued a protest letter to the NERC headquarters, setting a deadline of May 12, 2024, for the reversal of the electricity tariff hike. Failure to comply would result in mass action.

The NLC cited the adverse impact of the tariff hike on the general populace as the primary reason for demanding its reversal, emphasizing that it violates established legal procedures and infringes upon the rights of Nigerian citizens.
