Delhi Bans Bike Services

Published

Delhi Transport Department has issued a public notice to ban bike taxi services provided by Uber, Ola and Rapido in Delhi.

The notice cites that the bike taxi services are in violation of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, as two-wheelers with non-transport registration numbers are being used for carrying passengers on hire, which is considered a commercial operation. The notice mentions that a fine of Rs 5,000 will be charged for the first offence, and for subsequent offences, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be charged along with imprisonment, and the driver’s license will be suspended for a minimum period of three years.

This move comes just weeks after the Supreme Court banned Rapido services in Maharashtra, as the company was operating without a legal license. The ban on bike taxi services in Delhi may come as a surprise to many who rely on two-wheeler transport to reach their destinations at a lower cost. However, it is important to comply with transport rules and regulations for the safety and well-being of both riders and passengers.
