Deadpool and Wolverine: "Everything you'll want in a Marvel movie"

Deadpool and Wolverine lives up to the hype from its trailers, delivering a fun and exciting popcorn flick that fans will enjoy, even on repeat viewings.

The nostalgia of Hugh Jackman returning to wield the adamantium claws one more time was one thing, but relying solely on Jackman’s return could have made the movie feel redundant after the first 30 minutes. Thankfully, it did not.

While the film needed both leads, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool carries the movie, providing audiences with a perfect blend of the FOX film series and a typical Disney Marvel movie. Speaking of Marvel movies, Deadpool and Wolverine is the first film in the MCU franchise that fans will truly find entertaining since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, where No Way Home failed, “Deadpool and Wolverine” excels. It doesn’t just rely on the nostalgia of Hugh Jackman or its legacy cameos but also gives audiences a reason to care about the characters. Although the Logan we meet in Deadpool and Wolverine is entirely different from the character in the FOX X-Men films, the story gives this Logan real depth, presenting him as a real person dealing with survivor’s guilt and not a carricature.

Very few film narratives manage to introduce a completely new character in a movie filled with nostalgic cameos while still exploring that character’s depth.

Review: 'Deadpool & Wolverine' isn't a movie, it's a corporate in-joke

“Spiderman No Way Home” in contrast, could not do this with its side characters but Deadpool and Wolverine does it without trying too hard.

The performances were great from the two leads, the humor sticks and the nostalgia, very much reminds audiences what Marvel movies used to be in its previous phases — a running gag the film did not fail to throw a jab at.

For the story; who doesn’t like a well executed ‘redemption story’?

The story, despite not taking itself too seriously, presents characters in a relatable way to the audience. We see individuals grappling with regrets and the realization that they never lived up to their potential, a sentiment many people can relate to at some point in their lives.

“Deadpool and Wolverine” is the kind of movie that can be watched on repeat, even after the nostalgia of the first viewing fades. However, it leaves fans asking lots of questions; is this Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine? And what is to become of the Deadpool franchise now that it is officially in the MCU?

The cameos:

Saving the spoilers for the last; Chris Evans’ cameo in the movie along with legacy actors like Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Eleckra is sure to live fans entertained. The blink and miss cameo of Henry Cavill as ‘Wolverine’ is sure to make fans smile the minute he pops up on screen. And, Channing Tatum finally got to play Gambit but we need to talk about his dialect coach for sure.

Rating:

An 8 out of 10, largely due to the performances of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who make the film both fun and funny. The jokes might not have landed as well if Reynolds and Jackman had not starred together in this film.
