Court Sentence Man to Six Months in Jail for Stealing Fans in Kano
On Tuesday, a 20-year-old man was sentenced by a court in Kano to six months in a correctional centre for stealing fans.
The suspect, identified as Murtala Halliru was sentenced by a Kano Shari’a Court to six months in a correctional centre.
The man was ordered by the court to receive 30 strokes of the cane for stealing 13 ceiling fans.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Halliru, a resident of Gwammaja Quarters in Kano, pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft and was convicted.
The presiding Judge, Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, sentenced Halliru to six months in prison without the option of a fine and ordered that he receive 30 strokes of the cane.
Yusuf-Ahmad also ordered the defendant to pay N44,000 in compensation for the stolen ceiling fans.
The prosecution counsel, Aliyu Abideen, informed the court that Halliru committed the theft on February 23 at Kano State Polytechnic.
Abideen stated that at noon on the same day, the defendant was arrested by the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic, Sani Suleiman, who found Halliru in possession of two ceiling fans on his bicycle, valued at N8,000.
“During the course of the investigation, the defendant confessed to having stolen 11 ceiling fans valued at N44,000 from the said polytechnic,” Abideen said.
He added that the offence contravened the provision of Section 133 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
