CDC Director Rochelle Walensky has announced her resignation.

Dr. Walensky, who has served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since January 2021, made the announcement in a statement released earlier today.

In her statement, she thanked her colleagues at the CDC for their hard work and dedication during her tenure, and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve the American people.

Dr. Walensky’s resignation comes at a critical time for the CDC, as the agency continues to lead the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CDC has faced significant challenges during the pandemic, including criticism over its messaging on mask wearing, and confusion over its guidance on vaccine boosters.

Dr. Walensky’s successor has not yet been named, but the search for a new CDC director is expected to begin soon. In the meantime, Dr. Anne Schuchat, a longtime CDC official, will serve as acting director.
