Barcelona Survive An Onslaught Of Red Cards To Top La Liga

If you want to be at the top or become Champion, there would come the time, victories and wins will have to be dug out from strange situations, and that is what Xavi’s Barcelona side did on Tuesday night to climb to 5 points top of the La Liga table even with red cards flashing faces.

Real Madrid fans will be biting their fingers obviously, especially having surrendered 3 points over the weekend to Rayo Vallecano just to have El Clasico rivals leapfrog them in the table.

It seems to be contrasting fortunes for a Barcelona side this season, along with inconsistencies considering their fine form in the Spanish La Liga hasn’t been replicated in the Champions League this season.

One man who had quite a forgettable night and who unfortunately ended his Barcelona and overall career with a red stain on the night was Gerard Pique, who despite not playing was one of those who stood the recipient of red cards shown on the night.

The Tuesday night fixture in the La Liga game saw Barcelona defeating Osasuna 2-1 despite the dismissals of Robert Lewandowski and Gerard Pique.

In the 30th minute, Lewandowski intentionally fouled David Garcia, earning him a second booking.

Pique, meanwhile, was sent off while still on the bench following a first-half altercation with the official.

When Lewandowski was dismissed, Barca was down 1-0 against Osasuna. But despite being down a man, Pedri leveled the score for the visitors.

Raphinha’s looping header later gave Xavi Hernandez’s team the victory and increased their LaLiga advantage over Real Madrid to five points.

Without respect to Madrid’s outcome against Cadiz on Thursday, Barcelona will remain in top place during the World Cup break as a result of the result.
