Former Minnesota police officer who was convicted in the killing of Daunte Wright. Kim Potter, who served as a police officer in the Brooklyn Center suburb of Minneapolis, was released from prison earlier today.

Potter was found guilty of manslaughter in December 2021 for fatally shooting Wright during a traffic stop in April 2021. Wright was unarmed at the time of the shooting, and his death sparked protests and unrest in the Minneapolis area.

Potter was sentenced to 24 years in prison, but her sentence was reduced to 15 years after a judge granted her a motion for reconsideration. She had been serving her sentence at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee.

Potter’s release comes after she served just over four months in prison. She will now be required to serve the remainder of her sentence on supervised release.

The release of Potter has reignited conversations about police accountability and reform in the United States, particularly in the wake of the verdict in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty of murder in the killing of George Floyd.
