Apple enhances multilingual features in iOS 18 update
Apple has introduced the iOS 18 update, bringing extensive multilingual support and various other enhancements.
The update was unveiled last month at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), with two developer betas released since, showcasing new language capabilities across the lock screen, Siri, keyboard, and search functionalities.
The iOS 18 update allows users to customize their lock screens with time displayed in different numeral systems, supporting 12 languages: Arabic, Arabic Indic, Bangla, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Meitei, Odia, Ol Chiki, and Telugu. Additionally, the keyboard now features trilingual predictive typing, enabling users to type in Latin text and receive suggestions in three languages without switching keyboards.

In the Messages app, the keyboard remembers the last language used for each thread, supporting English, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
A new Korean and English multiscript keyboard is also available. Improved language search allows users to find different spellings of similar-sounding words in languages like Assamese, Bangla, Devanagari, and Gujarati.
Other notable language-related updates include live voicemail transcription in Indian English, Hindi support in the Translate app, Arabic support in the Live Text feature, and new grammar engines for Hindi and Korean. Users can also create contact posters using Indian languages and numerals.
Apple plans to release the public version of iOS 18 this fall. While these features are currently available in beta versions, users are cautioned that the betas may contain bugs and are not recommended for installation on primary devices.
