Cholera outbreak in Lagos State: 15 Dead, 350 suspected cases reported

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, announced a severe cholera outbreak on Saturday, which has resulted in 15 deaths over the past few days.

Abayomi revealed that 350 suspected cholera cases have been reported, with 17 confirmed.

In response to the outbreak, the state Ministry of Health has activated the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) at Mainland Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

The PHEOC aims to address the rising number of severe gastroenteritis cases across multiple local government areas.

“Laboratory tests have confirmed cholera sub-type O-1, known for causing more severe disease,” Abayomi said. “While cases have decreased in previously affected LGAs due to our interventions, new cases are emerging in other areas. Residents must adhere to strict personal and environmental hygiene measures.”

The state Ministry of Health has been working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), led by Dr. Jide Idris, and partners from the World Health Organization (WHO) to optimize interventions.

Abayomi urged residents to support the state government’s efforts by following precautionary measures, cooperating with health authorities, and participating in community-wide sanitation activities, especially as the Eid al-Adha celebration approaches.
