NNPCL, EFCC collaborate to combat crude oil theft

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has partnered with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat Nigeria’s ongoing crude oil theft problem.

This joint initiative was launched during an interactive session between NNPC Ltd.’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.

During the discussion, Kyari emphasised the critical need to address the widespread crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism affecting the country’s oil sector. He emphasised the negative effects of these illicit activities on Nigeria’s economy and asked for coordinated measures to effectively combat them.

Kyari provided startling numbers, stating that hundreds of illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region had been shut down, as well as countless illegal pipeline connections.

Despite these measures, he acknowledged the challenges faced by the ongoing appearance of new unlawful links and emphasised the need to work with the EFCC to address the underlying causes of crude oil theft.

Olukoyede praised NNPC Ltd.’s dedication to fostering ethics and regulatory compliance. However, he emphasised the importance of strong monitoring and enforcement systems to supplement these efforts and increase deterrents against economic crimes.
