Two prominent Senators of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mathew Urhogide of Edo State and Ayo Akinyelure of Ondo State, have announced their resignations from the party.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, disclosed the resignations during the plenary session held on Wednesday, where he read their separate resignation letters.

Senator Urhogide, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, is also the chair of the Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC). In his letter, he expressed that his decision to leave the PDP is due to the party’s inability to reconcile ongoing disputes at both the state level in Edo and the national level.

Similarly, Senator Akinyelure, who holds the position for Ondo Central Senatorial District and also serves as the chair of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, announced his decision to part ways with the party. Unlike his Edo counterpart, Akinyelure mentioned his intention to depart at the end of the 9th Senate session, with an aim to pursue various endeavors that would contribute to the development of his native Ondo State and Nigeria in general.

This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as the Senators’ resignations from the opposition party may have implications on the power dynamics within the Senate. As of yet, it remains unclear if the Senators will be joining another political party.
