The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is a multi-campus South African public research university situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. It is more commonly known as Wits University.
DST-NRF Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Human Development at University of Witwatersrand is delighted to offer its Human Research Grants. These grants are exclusively open to international students.
The aim of the grants to enable researchers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions on long-term projects that are locally relevant and internationally competitive in order to enhance the pursuit of research excellence and capacity development.

Grants are awarded in the fields of thematic areas.
Value
Opportunity Grants (up to R150 000 for 18 months) and Accelerator Grants (up to R300 000 for two years).
Eligibility
The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:
Opportunity Grants: These activities may include inter-disciplinary or inter-institutional sessions at conferences, seminars with funders and other stakeholders, dissemination activities, special journal issues, etc.
Accelerator Grants: These are activities to initiate networks and research in the thematicareas and other activities that will advance enquiry in a theme and lead to further research grants and opportunities in the forthcoming years. These include meetings with funders and policy stakeholders, dissemination activities, joint publications, reviews on crossdisciplinary topics, etc
Application
Applicants can apply via online:
Proposals for Opportunity and Accelerator grants should be no longer than 6 pages, and consist of:
-A conceptual or empirical justification of the activity in terms of human development, its relevance to South Africa and to the thematic areas of the CoE.
-An outline of the activity as related to the key performance areas of the CoE, namely: (1) Research, (2) Education and Training, (3) Information Brokerage, (4) Networking and (5) Service Rendering.
-Expected outputs and benefits in the short and longer term, and the time frames in which the outputs will be realized.
-Planned networking across disciplines and institutions.
-Involvement and capacity development of post-graduate students.
-A short biosketch of the Principal Investigator (PI).
-It is important to note the following concerning the budget: (1) Value Added Tax (“VAT”) and overhead costs are not to be charged by the recipient institution from the CoEHuman Development research funding; (2) Salaried time of the Principal Investigator cannot exceed 30% (thirty percent) of the total budget of the Grantee’s project research funded by the CoE-Human Development; (3) the budget can only be comprised of these line items: (a) salaries, (b) travel, (c) equipment and (d) running expenses.
