“Your Old Man inspired my jokes” — AY to Seun Kuti

Seun Kuti may have started the online drama, but AY Makun plays his part to perfection, and its his response that concludes the ‘dog’ matter.
Nigerian comic artiste and standup comedian, AY Makun has responded to Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti over the allegations that he had labeled Kuti’s daughter a dog in one of his standup acts.
These claims arose following Seun Kuti’s accusations that AY made jokes about his encounters with the police and prison ordeals and also insulted his daughter.
During an Instagram Live session, Seun Kuti criticized AY’s actions, describing him as “unfunny” and a “dry goat with a smelly mouth.”
He even alleged that AY is known in the entertainment industry for having mouth odor and accused him of being a woman beater, stating that none of his children would respect him.
In response, AY released a video on his social media page, vehemently denying the allegations. He emphasized that, having experienced the struggle of trying to have a child for 13 years, he would never mock another person, especially a child, by referring to them as a dog.
AY clarified that the reference to a dog named ‘Hilda’ in one of his skits was unrelated to Seun Kuti’s daughter and stemmed from a separate incident involving individuals who had faced backlash for eating dog meat in Akwa Ibom state.
Regarding the claim of having mouth odor, AY expressed his confusion about how Seun Kuti came to that conclusion, as they had never had close contact.
He also highlighted that comedians use humor to address various social issues and trending topics, emphasizing that people with a good sense of humor should not take these jokes seriously.
AY also drew a parallel with Seun’s father, the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who was known for attacking and making fun of politicians with his songs and comments.
AY suggested that comedians had learned from Fela’s approach and noted that people often make jokes about him, which he takes in stride because he understands they are meant in good humor.
