Why we signed Kovacic -- Man City

Director of football for Man City, Txiki Begiristain, has shed light on the reasoning behind the club’s decision to secure the services of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

The transfer of Kovacic, a talented midfielder, to the Premier League champions, Man City was officially confirmed on Tuesday.

This move comes as City manager Pep Guardiola sought to strengthen his midfield options following the failed pursuit of Jude Bellingham, who recently joined Real Madrid.

Adding to the urgency, City’s captain, Ilkay Gundogan, completed a free transfer to Barcelona just a day prior, leaving a void to be filled in the team’s midfield setup.

During Kovacic’s unveiling, Begiristain outlined the factors that led to the club’s pursuit of the Croatian international. He emphasized Kovacic’s versatility, highlighting his ability to effectively operate as both a defensive midfielder (number 6) and a box-to-box midfielder (number 8).

This adaptability aligns with City’s tactical approach and offers Guardiola more options in shaping the team’s playing style.

“He can play as a 6 or an 8, has plenty of experience at top level clubs and he understands the Premier League.

“It was a very simple decision to bring him to City because he has the tactical and technical qualities we are looking for in a midfielder.

“He is someone we have monitored for a very long time and always we were impressed whenever we watched him.”

Furthermore, Begiristain expressed the importance of Kovacic’s experience at top-level clubs, which he believes will be valuable in City’s quest for success. Having spent time at clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea, Kovacic brings a wealth of knowledge and familiarity with high-pressure situations, making him well-suited to the demands of playing for a top-tier team.

The director of football also underlined Kovacic’s understanding of the Premier League, praising his ability to adapt to the unique challenges and pace of English football. City’s desire for a midfielder who can seamlessly integrate into their system and make an immediate impact was a key factor in their pursuit of Kovacic.

Begiristain made it clear that Kovacic’s signing was a result of long-term monitoring and admiration. The club’s scouts and coaching staff have consistently been impressed by the midfielder’s performances whenever they watched him play, ultimately leading to the decision to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

As Man City continue to shape their squad ahead of the upcoming season, the addition of Mateo Kovacic adds another dimension to their midfield options.

Supporters eagerly anticipate the Croatian’s contributions and his integration into Guardiola’s system, as City aims to maintain their dominance in domestic and European competitions.
