Why Liverpool won't win the League -- Jamie Carragher

Former Liverpool player and legend, Jamie Carragher had a couple of sincere words for his former side following their struggle versus Luton Town on Sunday after their 1-1 draw on the night.

According to the former defender now turned pundit, he stresses that Liverpool are far from being genuine title contenders in a league where dropping points to teams like Luton Town could come back to bite at the team.

Jamie Carragher believes for his former club to compete for the title, they need to bolster their squad with a defensive midfielder and an additional defender.

Liverpool currently sits in third place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Manchester City by three points.

Despite their promising start to the season, Liverpool’s vulnerabilities were exposed in their recent 1-1 draw against Luton, prompting Carragher to express his concerns.

He particularly pointed out the ease with which opposing teams can launch counter-attacks against Liverpool.

During an appearance on Sky Sports, Carragher stated,

“What Liverpool have had in the last 18 months, they’re a lot better at it this season, they’re still not as good as Manchester City at stopping counter-attacks.”

Carragher acknowledged Liverpool’s strength in dominating possession but highlighted their shortcomings in preventing turnovers and limiting opponents’ access to spaces behind their defense.

While Alexis Mac Allister, who arrived at Liverpool from Brighton, has been deployed as a holding midfielder, Carragher questioned his suitability for the role.

He mentioned that although Mac Allister possesses talent, he faces defensive challenges and lacks the necessary pace for the deep-lying midfield position. Carragher asserted that Liverpool still needs to strengthen in that area.

Carragher’s assessment extended to the defensive line, where he suggested that Liverpool should consider acquiring a versatile defender who can play in multiple positions.

He also proposed the idea of bringing in a right-back to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to occasionally move into midfield.

In Carragher’s words,

“I still think Liverpool could do with another player in that position, probably on the other side at right-back and maybe release Trent at different times maybe into midfield, against certain opposition you play someone there who’s maybe stronger and tougher defensively.”

While Liverpool currently aims to secure a place in the top four, Jamie Carragher believes they are not yet ready to challenge for the league title.

He, along with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters, recognizes the need to reinforce the squad with a midfield player and a top-class defender.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures include an away clash with Toulouse in the Europa League, followed by a league match at home against Brentford.
