Why It'll never work for Chelsea -- Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has shared his views on Chelsea and their lavish spending in the transfer window.

According to the former Celtic boss, he believes building a squad with balance and chemistry held a bigger weight than just acquiring the best players at any cost.

Postecoglou’s comments obviously are a straight criticism of their next opponent, Chelsea who have recently seen significant investment in their squad.

Postecoglou took over as the manager of Tottenham during the summer and faced the immediate challenge of losing star player Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

However, he has managed to strengthen the Spurs squad with signings like James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Brennan Johnson, and the team currently sits second in the Premier League, with an upcoming game against Chelsea.

Chelsea, now under the management of former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, has experienced a difficult start to the season, currently sitting 12th in the Premier League table.

Under the leadership of Chairman Todd Boehly, Chelsea has spent approximately Ā£1 billion on new player acquisitions since May 2022.

Despite making his own signings at Tottenham, Postecoglou is cautious about excessive spending. He believes that constantly investing in the best players is not a guarantee of success and emphasizes the importance of squad balance and player commitment to a shared cause.

Postecoglou stated,

“I’ve always said I’ve never felt it is about just spending money. That’s been proved time and time again. If you get it all right then you’ve got a pretty strong case, but there’s always a limit to every team.

“You can’t have 24 world-class players. That will never work. It’s been proven that it doesn’t work. It’s about having a squad that’s balanced, guys that are committed to a cause.”

He further emphasized that simply spending enormous sums to acquire the best players doesn’t guarantee success. Instead, he believes in building a team with the right chemistry, rather than just gathering the 24 best players in the world.
