Why Ben White snubbed England call-up
A report by The Athletic has revealed why Arsenal defender Ben White reportedly snubbed a call-up from the England national team ahead of the international break.
The report throws more light into why the Centre Back took the situation that has puzzled a lot football fans and pundits alike.
This comes after the former Brighton and Hove Albion star renewed his contract with Arsenal on Thursday.
England manager Gareth Southgate disclosed on Thursday that White had expressed disinterest in being considered for national team duties, a sentiment conveyed through a communication from Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu.
Southgate elaborated, stating,
“We had a call from Edu last week saying Ben didn’t want to be considered for England squads at the moment. I spoke to him post-Qatar and there was reticence from his side.”
Contrary to Southgate’s assertions that there were no issues, Ben White is reported to be snubbing an England call up for 3 reasons, with the main factor being the competition for a starting spot in the national team.
According to reports by The Athletic, White finds it difficult being low in the pecking order in the Three Lions set up.
Added to that, the Athletic report contradicts the claim by Southgate.
According to their report, Ben White was at the receiving end of a row with England assistant manager Steve Holland.
A third reason given in the publication, asserts that the Arsenal star is allegedly finding international football difficult, especially settling into the rhythms of tournament life.
However, Gareth Southgate still leaves the door open for Ben White to return to the team in the future, perhaps before the Euros.
“I want that door wide open. He would be in this squad, but he’s not available to us.” he said.
