Who would be a perfect fit for Chelsea -- Gary Neville

Former Manchester United and England defender, Gary Neville, has suggested that former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino should be appointed as Chelsea’s next manager following the sacking of Graham Potter on Sunday.

Potter was dismissed after just seven months in charge of the club, with Chelsea languishing in 11th place in the Premier League table.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football ahead of the match between Everton and Tottenham, Neville said:

“They [Chelsea] have spent £600m and they have done their spending apart from a centre-forward for the next three years. They have got to appoint a manager who is going to inherit and like the squad that they have. I think that man, because of a lot of them are young, is Pochettino.”

Pochettino has been without a managerial role since he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain last summer after just 18 months in charge of the French club. He was strongly linked with the Manchester United job after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure last season, but the Premier League club opted to appoint Erik ten Hag instead.

Neville’s suggestion has divided opinion on social media, with some fans keen to see Pochettino at the club, while others are reluctant to appoint a former Tottenham manager.

“I think on a footballing level he’s the best choice. But I think would the board really want to risk getting a manager in that the fans will immediately hate. Who ever comes in will struggle at first especially if it’s this season,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another commented: “A failed manager giving advice on another failed manager lmao.” A third added: “Last thing he wants is Chelsea being a power house again! He is trolling hard.” While another simply wrote: “Nah we’re good.”

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is now searching for a third permanent manager since his consortium completed its takeover of the club last year.

Gary Neville believes that Chelsea should appoint a manager who is happy with the squad they have and will not demand further expensive signings. Whether or not Pochettino will be that manager remains to be seen.
