"Where are the Fuel Subsidy savings going?" — Peter Obi

Former Presidential candidate of the 2023 elections, Peter Obi has put to the government a ‘serious question’, what projects are the fuel subsidy savings being channeled into?

The former Anambra State governor reignited the fuel subsidy debate in Nigeria, demanding clearer accountability from the federal government. It should be noted that since the emergence of the Bola Tinubu Administration, the Federal Government claims to have withdrawn from the fuel subsidy scheme of previous administrations.

However, the withdrawal from the scheme is yet to be reflected on the country’s dwindling economy.

August 1: What Peter Obi said about #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria protests

In a recent interview, Obi questioned the lack of transparency surrounding the removal of fuel subsidies and urged the government to provide a detailed breakdown of where the savings are being redirected. His concerns come as Nigeria’s debt continues to soar, and citizens grapple with rising costs of living, despite the supposed subsidy relief.

Peter Obi also emphasized the need for better biometric systems and tighter controls on Nigeria’s borrowing practices, calling for an urgent focus on the nation’s development. While dismissing talk of future elections, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the present struggles of Nigerians rather than chasing political ambition.

On another front, the former governor expressed solidarity with #EndBadGovernance protesters, defending their right to peaceful demonstrations. He urged the government to engage protesters in dialogue rather than resorting to punitive actions, drawing on his own experience managing protests during his tenure in Anambra State.

Obi’s insistence on transparency and dialogue marks a sharp critique of the government’s current approach, raising important questions about fiscal responsibility and citizens’ rights.
