“What they did to Shakira was wrong” — Alexi Lalas
In a scathing critique, former American footballer Alexi Lalas has torn into the organizers of the 2024 Copa America final over the botched halftime show featuring global superstar Shakira.
The Colombian singer was supposed to electrify fans during the break of the Argentina vs. Colombia match at Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium, but Lalas claims the performance was marred by glaring production errors.

Speaking on his State of the Union podcast, Lalas didn’t hold back, saying, “I have nothing against Shakira, she seems to be a big star. The actual performance, I don’t think it was anything historic or will be remembered.”
Lalas pointed out several issues, including the absence of backup dancers during the initial part of Shakira’s performance, which he described as “weird” and “unusual.” He also criticized the lighting, which he said cast unflattering shadows on the singer’s legs, making them look like “fish scales.”
“My big problem, I don’t know who does their lighting. I don’t know who the production team was, but somebody needs to get fired,” Lalas exclaimed.
He argued that the poor lighting and production choices did a disservice to Shakira, detracting from what could have been a stellar performance.
