What Jose Peseiro has to say about Guinea Bissau vs. Nigeria
The head coach of the Nigerian national football team, Jose Peseiro, has expressed his disappointment at the team’s performance in their recent double-header against Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Despite securing a 1-0 victory in the second game, Jose Peseiro believes that his side deserved more from both encounters.
The Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first game, played on Friday, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
However, they bounced back to secure a narrow win in the return leg, held at the September 24 Stadium in Bissau on Monday night. Nantes of France winger, Moses Simon, scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, after right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel was brought down inside the box.
In his post-match interview, Jose Peseiro lamented his team’s profligacy in front of goal, stating that they could have won both games convincingly if they had converted their scoring chances.
“We could have won 6-1 in Abuja and 5-0 here in Bissau today because we played better on Friday than today. But that’s football, sometimes you play better than your opponents but the result will show otherwise. We dominated the match more at home than today but we could not convert our scoring chances,” he said.
Despite the disappointment, the Super Eagles still occupy top spot in Group D of the AFCON qualifiers with six points from three games. Peseiro’s men will now travel to Sierra Leone for their next match, scheduled for Sunday, June 11, 2023.
Nigerian football fans will be hoping that the Super Eagles can build on their recent victory over Guinea-Bissau and secure their qualification for the 2023 AFCON, which will be hosted by Ivory Coast. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on January 9, 2024, and will feature 24 teams from across the continent.
