Weghorst Redemption: Striker In Tears After Old Trafford Goal
Wout Weghorst, on loan from Burnley, scored his first goal at Old Trafford on Thursday night during Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the Europa League.
The 30-year-old forward, who joined United on a six-month loan deal in January, has become a fan favourite in recent weeks due to his hard work on the pitch. Weghorst’s goal was the result of great play from Facundo Pellistri on the right wing, with the Netherlands international following up on Scott McTominay’s weak effort to poke the ball home from close range.
Weghorst’s emotions were clearly visible as he celebrated his goal. The striker, who had been in an 11-game goal drought, was on the verge of tears as he knee-slid in front of the packed Stretford End. Weghorst’s teammates rushed over to celebrate with him, and it was evident how much the goal meant to the striker.
Fans also praised Weghorst’s goal and celebrated his efforts on the pitch. One fan wrote, “Deserved. Yeah he has wasted chances, but he has done everything right other than scoring before.”
Another fan commented, “Happy for this guy! He’s work tirelessly on the pitch. Kept pressing the opposition defence. You can see he wants to prove something.”
A third fan noted the emotional celebration and said, “It’s been a tough few days for him and he will know he should have taken at least one of his earlier chances.”
It has been a challenging week for Weghorst, who received backlash from fans after he touched the famous “This is Anfield” sign ahead of United’s humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Some fans accused him of failing to understand the rivalry between the two clubs. Weghorst later clarified that his intention was to “wind up” Virgil van Dijk before kick-off.
Despite the criticism, Weghorst remains dedicated to Manchester United, saying in a statement, “As a proud player for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned.”
