“We won’t let it happen again” — New CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso
In a resolute statement, the recently confirmed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, has pledged that he and his team will remain impervious to external influences, including political pressures.
Dr. Cardoso’s commitment to maintaining the CBN’s autonomy and integrity was articulated during his appearance alongside his appointed deputy governors for screening before the Senate.
The deputy governors introduced to the Senate during the screening process are Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello.
When posed with a crucial question by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the potential for political interference in his tenure as Governor, Cardoso assured the Senate and the Nigerian public that such concerns were unfounded.
He emphatically stated,
“It is important that we, who are considered for this position today, understand that this is a position of trust. With that comes a huge responsibility to meet up with that trust.
“I know that a lot of time and effort has gone into choosing the people who are standing here for nomination today.”
Dr. Cardoso continued,
“As far as I am concerned, under my leadership, we will not be hijacked by anybody.
“The idea is to ensure that we do what is right, when it is right, and how it is right. We’ve seen what the effect of not doing right has been, and we do not intend for that to be repeated.”
