U.S Elections: Biden trying everything to boost confidence

U.S. President Joe Biden, at 81, is facing intense scrutiny from within his own party about his ability to lead, following a lackluster debate performance against Republican Donald Trump. Despite calls from senior Democrats to step aside, Biden is adamant about staying in the race, labeling the criticism as “nonsense.”

Over the weekend, the 45th President o America, campaigned in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, aiming to solidify support among Black voters, who are crucial to his base but whose support has recently shown signs of wavering.

At a Philadelphia church, Biden was warmly received, with Bishop Louis Felton praising his integrity and criticizing Trump’s frequent dishonesty.

Biden, emphasizing unity, told the congregation:

“We must unite America again. That’s what I’m going to do.”

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a call on Sunday, during which some House Democrats, including Representatives Jerrold Nadler and Adam Smith, suggested Biden should consider stepping down. Vice President Kamala Harris, seen as a potential successor, was also discussed.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy and Representative Adam Schiff echoed the urgency for the president to address these concerns publicly. Murphy suggested a town hall or news conference to reassure voters of Biden’s capabilities. Schiff believed that Harris could win but emphasized the need for Biden to make a swift decision.

In Harrisburg, Biden remained confident, asserting that the Democratic Party was behind him. His visit was part of a broader strategy, including a $50 million media campaign, to target swing states. Upcoming trips to Nevada and Texas aim to reach Black and Latino audiences and commemorate significant civil rights milestones.

As Congress reconvenes and donors evaluate their support, the president faces mounting pressure. However, he continues to prepare for significant international engagements, including hosting a NATO summit. While some Democrats call for change, others, like Senator Bernie Sanders, stand firmly behind Biden, focusing on policy over optics.

Biden’s resolve to remain in the race, despite internal party challenges, underscores the complex dynamics within the Democratic Party as it navigates the 2024 election landscape.
