Two COVID-19 positive women deliver healthy babies in Rivers

Two COVID-19 positive women have delivered healthy babies at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, on Friday.

The hospital said a boy was given birth to through normal delivery, while the second mother was delivered of a baby girl through an elective caesarean section.

The Public Relations Officer, UPTH, Elabha Meni, told The PUNCH on Sunday that the babies tested negative for the virus.

Meni added that both mothers, who tested positive for COVID-19, were responding to treatment.

She also praised the doctors, who took delivery of the babies, for their bravery.

She said, “The first delivery was a spontaneous vertex delivery of a baby boy, while the second delivery was through an elective cesarean section of a beautiful baby girl. Both babies are doing well and are negative; the mother that delivered normally has been discharged; our doctors are following up on her at home.

“The other mother, who delivered through an elective cesarean section, is still in our facility receiving care.”

Meni added that the hospital had admitted 80 COVID-19 patients and discharged 47, noting over 1,000 tests had been conducted in the facility.

She stated, “This development is not a flash in the pan as the COVID-19 treatment and testing centre of the hospital has admitted 80 patients and successfully discharged 47 of them with 11 currently on admission. The few deaths recorded have mostly arisen from late presentation to the hospital.

“The UPTH molecular laboratory has run over 1,500 samples and serves the South-South states; our treatment centre has been expanded with the opening of another treatment area for suspected cases in the hospital. This is to meet up with the expanding responsibilities arising from the increased demands on the existing facilities.”
