Totally Unnecessary—Roy Keane
Suppose there is a goalkeeper that will go down in history as a goalie full of shithousery, in that case, it is no other than Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez, and that reason alone earned the ire of former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane on the night.
Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper for Argentina, came under fire from the former Premier League great Roy Keane for his antics during the penalty shootout.
After 120 minutes, the game ended 3-3, and Argentina and France’s 2022 World Cup final was decided on a penalty shootout.
After Kingsley Coman’s attempt was saved by the goalie and Aurelian Tchouameni missed the target, Martinez’s theatrics in the penalty shootout was not well received by Roy Keane.
After the game ended 2-2 after the first 90 minutes and 3-3 after extra time, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties.
Martinez, the goalie for Aston Villa, is renowned for his ability to stop penalties. After stopping Coman’s penalty kick, Martinez erupted in jubilation in front of Coman.
The Premier League goalkeeper tried to approach the Real Madrid midfielder before Tchouameni stepped up and Martinez threw the ball away, prompting the referee to hand him a yellow card.
“The games he was playing, we don’t like to see that,” Keane said on ITV.
“But we always thought Argentina were favorites if it went to penalties because of him.”
