Teach me how you did it -- Okorocha praises Lawan's comeback

In a surprising turn of events, Senator Rochas Okorocha of Imo West has sought the guidance of Senate President Ahmad Lawan, desiring to understand how Lawan managed to return to the Senate after losing the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside him.

During the APC primary election, both Okorocha and Lawan vied for the party’s presidential ticket but were defeated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, the Supreme Court later declared Lawan as the legitimate candidate, even though he had not contested the primary. Instead, Bashir Machina had been elected as the candidate of the Yobe North senatorial ticket.

Baffled by Lawan’s emergence as the Yobe North senatorial candidate, Okorocha took the opportunity to address the issue during the valedictory session of the ninth Senate held on Saturday.

He expressed his confusion, saying,

“I did not contest for the Senate this period. I only contested for the office of the president. You are a very smart politician. How you came back is another chapter in our political history that we need to discuss. I was there in the field with you running for president, and I never knew how you were able to meander, leaving some of us. Next time, you must teach me how to do that.”

Responding to Okorocha’s appeal, Lawan explained,

“It was not a straightforward journey. I was there with you in the field, and after our defeat, my constituents believed they still needed me. They requested my return, and it became a complex process that involved going through the courts.”

Lawan’s explanation suggests that his constituents persuaded him to run for re-election as a senator, resulting in his eventual comeback. The specific legal mechanisms employed in this process remain undisclosed.

The interaction between Senator Okorocha and Senate President Lawan has sparked interest among political observers, given the implications of Lawan’s unexpected return to the Senate. However, further details regarding the legal aspects of Lawan’s journey were not disclosed during the valedictory session.

As the ninth Senate concludes its term, the discussion surrounding Lawan’s political trajectory and his eventual re-election will likely continue to captivate political circles, prompting a closer examination of the complexities involved in his successful comeback.
