FG delegation visits site of tanker gas explosion in Abeokuta

A delegation from the Federal Government, led by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, visited the site of a recent tanker gas explosion in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital.

The incident, involving a Gascon Marine Ltd truck, resulted in the driver’s assistance death and the destruction of six vehicles and two shops.

The delegation, including Farouk Ahmed, CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, inspected the scene at Ita-Oshin.

During the visit, Minister Ekpo emphasized the nation’s transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the importance of maintaining safety standards.

He highlighted concerns regarding the use of substandard equipment, urging collaboration with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance.

Additionally, Ekpo expressed the government’s aim to reduce gas transportation by road due to safety risks.

Ahmed reiterated the commitment of regulatory agencies to enforce standards in the oil and gas industry, emphasizing support for the transition to CNG despite the accident.

Segun Ogunwunmi, Managing Director of Gascon Marine Ltd, affirmed the company’s adherence to safety standards, emphasizing its incident-free record over five years.
