South Africans threaten Stanley Nwabali after AFCON defeat
It may have been a football game, but the rivalry sits deep in South Africans and according to the latest reports, they may want to take the defeat to Nigeria personal with Stanley Nwabali.
Stanley Nwabali, Nigeria’s goalie in the AFCON tournament played a part in South Africa’s elimination from the tournament.
With a Man of the Match winning performance to stop the Bafana Bafana from taking a lead within the 120 minutes of play and double penalty saves in the penalty shootout, Stanley Nwabali stands as the villain for South Africans.
Speaking with Channels television, former Nigerian goalkeeper Idah Peterside revealed that some South African fans have expressed their displeasure with Nwabali’s pivotal role in eliminating their team from the competition.
However, Peterside emphasized that no incidents of violence have been reported thus far.
According to Peterside, some fans have warned the Nigerian player from returning to his club, Chippa United who plays in the South African Premier League.
Stanley Nwabali has received recognition and accolades following stellar performances at the 2023 AFCON that has helped the Super Eagles proceed into the final for a rematch against Ivory Coast.
In recent times, South Africans have carried out xenophobic attacks on foreign internationals from other African countries that a few times have seen a lot of Nigerians suffer the consequences.
