South Africans demand Chidimma Adetshina be Disqualified

Controversy has erupted ahead of Miss Universe 2024 as South African group Progressive Forces calls for the disqualification of Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, over her family’s alleged involvement in identity fraud.

Chidimma Adetshina, who recently touched down in Mexico for the global competition, now faces mounting pressure from this petition that has quickly gained traction, amassing over 1,000 signatures within a day.

The backstory is as complex as it is controversial. Chidimma Adetshina, who initially pursued the Miss South Africa crown, withdrew from that pageant after the South African Department of Home Affairs revealed allegations that her mother had committed identity fraud.

Now representing Nigeria, Adetshina’s eligibility is under fire, with activists arguing that her participation may compromise Miss Universe’s values of integrity and fairness.

The petition reads:

“We are greatly concerned about Chidimma Adetshina… whose mother has been found guilty of committing identity fraud. We… plead with Miss Universe to cancel her entry.”

For many, the moral question lingers: should a contestant bear the weight of familial misdeeds? While Progressive Forces views this disqualification as a stand for “justice,” others see it as a case of guilt by association, casting a shadow over a young woman’s aspirations on the world stage.

As the debate rages, this situation underscores the high moral standards placed on pageant representatives and begs the question of where personal accountability ends and inherited reputations begin.
