Obiora Remigius, a lecturer at the Philosophy Department of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State, stands accused of sexual harassment of a former student under his supervision, according to reports from UNNFreshers.

This disturbing news casts a shadow over the university’s reputation, highlighting an issue that requires swift and immediate action.

As detailed by the final year student, who was at the time under Obiora’s supervision for her final year project, she became a target of unwelcome and persistent sexual advances. Despite her consistent rejection, the harassment escalated into a full-fledged assault, tarnishing what should have been a period of academic achievement with a traumatic experience.

The young woman courageously shared her ordeal, recounting how the harassment escalated even further during a time when Obiora was preparing for his wedding. He allegedly asked her to assist with ushering duties at the ceremony. Despite the seemingly innocuous request, the incident was followed by numerous attempts from Obiora to coerce her into a sexual relationship.

In an effort to document her encounters, the student recorded one conversation where the lecturer exerted pressure on her to consent to his advances. After weeks of harassment and escalating tension, Obiora allegedly visited her apartment with unsavory intentions. Unbeknownst to him, however, her neighbors were vigilant and ready to intervene.

Upon her outcry for assistance, the lecturer was caught in a compromising situation by the student’s neighbours, marking a brief moment of reprisal for the beleaguered student. In the aftermath of the incident, she alleges that the lecturer threatened to prevent her graduation and cynically predicted the institution’s management would be indifferent to her situation.

Despite the cautionary advice she received from some quarters, suggesting silence until graduation, she chose to speak up and share her harrowing experience. She has now recounted her story publicly via UNNFreshers, sparking a serious conversation about the systemic issues of sexual harassment within educational institutions.
