Sao Tome gift Super Falcons a chance at WAFCON qualification
“If you can’t beat them, run from them,” — it appears the route Sao Tome and Principe Women’s National team have chosen to follow ahead of the WAFCON qualifying round to gift Nigeria’s Women a path into the second round of the qualifiers.
In essence, the Nigeria Super Falcons are no longer set to fixture against Sao Tome Women as they have reportedly withdrawn from playing the tie.
The team was slated to face off against the formidable Super Falcons in a first-round qualifying fixture scheduled for later this month.
According to reliable sources, the football authorities of Sao Tome and Principe have already communicated their decision to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
This unexpected withdrawal has paved the way for the nine-time champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, to secure a spot in the second round of the competition without even stepping onto the pitch.
With this turn of events, the Nigerian women’s team, often referred to as the Super Falcons, can now look ahead to the next stage of the qualifiers.
They are set to face off against the winner of the matchup between Cape Verde and Liberia in the second round.
The eventual victor of that contest will earn the coveted ticket to participate in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is slated to be hosted by Morocco.
Sao Tome and Principe recently faced Nigeria in the Men’s AFCON qualifying round, with the Men’s team suffering a colossal 16-0 defeat over two legs in the group.
