Police suspend e-CMR for public education

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) registration process, which was set to start on July 29, 2024.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, directed this suspension to allow more time for public education on the new system.

The e-CMR initiative aims to digitalize motor vehicle registration, improving vehicle security and aiding in the fight against crimes like terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

This system ensures seamless documentation and verification of vehicle ownership, making tracking and recovering stolen vehicles easier and preventing the sale of stolen vehicles to innocent buyers.

The Nigeria Police Force emphasized that the initiative is not a revenue-generating platform but a move to enhance policing efficiency and public safety. The e-CMR will provide a comprehensive database accessible to dedicated officers in real-time, preventing multiple vehicle registrations and adding valuable biometric and other data to the national database.

The Police urge the public to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng.

The IGP also warned police officers against demanding e-CMR certificates from the public, stating that any officers found exploiting citizens would be punished. The enforcement, to be conducted by dedicated officers, is on hold until further notice.
