Pep Guardiola, Liverpool manager: Could Liverpool surprise us?
Perhaps one of the craziest theories that could emerge on a Thursday, would be Pep Guardiola becoming the manager that succeeds Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. This happening will for sure be the one twist no one saw coming.
Although, nothing like such has been reported or even in the slightest imagination, seems feasible at this point, the Manchester City manager relocating to Merseyside to manage the Reds could be the X-factor that tears every speculation out through the roof.
Can it happen? Possibly. But will it happen? Now, that would be interesting.
Many names have been thrown out the window ever since Jurgen Klopp confirmed his exit from the role as Liverpool boss; the Ruben Amorims, Xabi Alonsos and the likes, but Fenway Sports Group are one secretive group who ever since owning the club, have conducted their business in the shadows.
For one, their transfer activities, are ones that doesn’t get too much eyes on until they are at least 98 percent done. Thus, a lot of times when the Reds are announced to be making their play for a player, chances are that things have been done behind the scenes hours and days before the media is aware of it.
A case study can be taken from Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of exiting the role come end of the season. No one got wind of it before it was actually made known to the public, but the club’s hierarchy was well aware of it since November. The failed move for Moises Caicedo at the dead of the night, took the internet by storm until Chelsea made a quick counter move to stop them. And that was made possible based on the fact Caicedo wanted the move to Chelsea.
Of course, player transfers are very much different from a managerial one, but what is the popular saying? ‘Business is business’.
Does Fenway Sports Group have an exciting project post Jurgen Klopp that require another elite manager taking the reins? No one can say for certain. That’s how close guarded they are. But does Liverpool have the ingredients to push for an exciting project post-Klopp? Yes. Do they have the pedigree to hire an elite status manager post-Klopp? Yes.
This was a group that interviewed Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti for the job after sacking Brendan Rodgers late 2016, to say that they cannot tempt an elite manager with an enticing offer is undermining Liverpool‘s status as a traditional elite side.
But this is Pep Guardiola we are talking about? Whatever could make Pep Guardiola think of leaving Manchester City and moving to Liverpool of all clubs despite everything he has done to them and they to him? Money? No. A challenge? Maybe.
After all, Jurgen Klopp is ready to bid farewells with the club after 9 successful years on Merseyside despite having an exciting project in place for the future, who says Pep Guardiola won’t do the same at Manchester City for a chance to manage a traditional big side?
These are all theories than an actual report, but if the 115 charges facing Manchester City were ever going to be the dent on Pep Guardiola’s managerial career, the Spaniard leaving the Etihad at the dead of the night, is something very much plausible even if it sounds incredulous. Will it be to Liverpool? Probably not.
Can it be to Liverpool? It could.
