NLC rejects Adamawa State’s new tax hike on civil servants’ salaries

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly rejected the recent increase in tax deductions imposed on civil servants by the Adamawa State government.

According to the NLC, the newly implemented tax regime led to unexpectedly high salary deductions for October, with some employees reportedly losing up to N40,000.

The tax hike comes after the recent national minimum wage increase.

NLC Deputy President Audu Titus Amba raised this issue on Wednesday in Yola, Adamawa’s capital. Amba, who also serves as the National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), called on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to urgently review the tax policy.

He criticized the move as undermining the intended benefits of the new minimum wage, stating, “It’s as good as giving with your right hand and taking it off with your left.”

Amba also highlighted concerns regarding the exclusion of local government and primary school teachers from the minimum wage adjustments, even though implementation began several months ago.

“I was a little bit worried,” he added, “when I got information that local government and primary school teachers are yet to benefit.”

The NUT President was in Yola to oversee the election of new NUT officials, with Faisal Abubakar Mohammed emerging as the new chairman of the union’s Adamawa State chapter.
