Nigeria’s democracy in trouble under Tinubu – Peter Obi laments
Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the February 25 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, describing it as deeply troubled and the nation’s destiny as uncertain and precarious.
In a statement shared on his verified Twitter handle, Obi lamented the undermining of foundational pillars of democracy, such as impunity, violence, and bloodshed. He criticized the lack of selfless leaders who are committed to the national interest, sustainable development, and innovative thinking that can provide Nigerians with freedom, protection of lives and property, and ordered liberties.
His statement coincides with the commemoration of “June 12 Democracy Day” in Nigeria, which holds significance as a milestone in the nation’s journey towards true democracy. Obi highlighted the collective choice of late Chief M.K.O. Abiola as a respected leader, both by Nigerians and governments worldwide, emphasizing the importance of June 12 in shaping Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.
However, Obi expressed dismay at the growing trust deficit between leaders and Nigerians. He criticized the troubled state of politics, where the destiny of the nation remains uncertain, and basic problems persist without adequate solutions.
Obi emphasized the need for the government to respect and protect democratic institutions, fulfilling its responsibilities and meeting the needs and wishes of the people in line with the constitution. He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law as a fundamental aspect of responsible governance.
The former governor of Anambra State drew attention to the prevailing challenges, including impunity, violence, and bloodshed, which undermine democracy’s foundational pillars. He highlighted the deficits of trust and efficiency evident in recent elections, calling for corrective measures to restore confidence in the democratic process.
Obi urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the democratic system’s ability to self-correct. He reaffirmed his commitment to the possibility of a new Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of selfless leaders who prioritize national interest, sustainable development, and innovative thinking. He expressed his belief that Nigeria has the resources and potential for equity, justice, security, and peace.
