Nigerian Lawyers Seek Justice For Oyibo Chukwu (SEE DETAILS)
The five branches of the Nigerian Bar Association have given security agencies 48 hours to find and apprehend the perpetrators or face action from all lawyers in the state over the murder of Oyibo Chukwu, a lawyer and former chairman of the Oji River Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association who was killed along with some of his supporters on Wednesday night.
The group was reportedly shot dead by gunmen in a white Hilux van at Eke-Otu Amechi-Awkunanaw Enugu, and their killers later set them ablaze in Chukwu’s vehicle.
As a form of protest, no court at the State High Court complex and others across the state sat. Judges who were not aware of the decision rose immediately they received the information.
Speaking to journalists at the court premises in Enugu, the Oji River Branch chairman of the NBA, Seth Nwokolo, described the killing as “gruesome” and “politically motivated.”
He expressed concern that the incident was a sign that the days of political killings were returning to Enugu.
The legal community in Enugu is in mourning, and many are calling on the authorities to act quickly to bring those responsible for Chukwu’s death to justice.
