Nigerian Gospel Singers

There are a not really a handful of Nigeria music hip-hop artists who are also or has featured in the Christian Genre of music, but then Christian Music and Christian rap music in Nigeria has been on a steady pace while hip-hop, Afro-pop and juju took the lead in Nigeria and Africa at Large from the Legendary Fella to the youngest Wizkid.

And to be truthful, even traditional home made songs otherwise known as Orin Ibile in the Yoruba language (Umu Obiligbo, Mc Oluomo, Pasuma) are even much more streamed then the christian genre of music whereas Nigeria is amongst the list of one of the most religious countries in the world.

Further research shows that Gospel music in Nigeria dates back to the 16th Century. During the time when the catholic missionaries arrived in the ancient Benin kingdom for their evangelical mission, and with their arrival came the introduction of liturgical music. Also, The coming of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) which birthed the then popular and still popular Bishop Ajayi Crowther created wide-spread evangelism across Nigeria as at that time in the 19th century and choral music was introduced. I can categorically tell you that, the above mentioned Liturgical Music of the then Catholics and the Choral Music otherwise known as choir music championed the introduction of christian music in what we now have in Nigeria today.

Below is an almost complete list of popular christian musicians we have in Nigeria today.

The Birth of Christian Rap in Nigeria

Over time after the birth of christian music in the 19th century, christian music has offensively proven its worth and continuous existence and has shown that it has come to stay and as well waxing stronger by the day especially now that the world is going through a whole of economic crisis. and Just like christian music the Christian Rap popularly known as Gospel Hip-Hop also have its roots in the 19th century and was introduced in the United State with little or no stream then, but over time the christian hip-hop has also found a way to fit into our current lifestyle in the 21st Century, over time the Christian Music has grown and taken more shape to fit into the current lifestyle of the type of world we found ourselves today. The first-ever made Christian hip-hop music was titled Jesus Christ (The Gospel Beat)” by  McSweet and the ever first Christian hip-hop album ever released was Bible Break by Stephen Wiley which happened to be a huge success back then in the 19th century.

Now currently in Nigeria, Christian rap or Christian Hip-hop (Gospel Hip-hop) has as well found a way into the christian music industry and its currently waxing stronger by the day and as well effective in the lives of many young lads and youths of these century, and below is a handful of the list of christian rap musicians we have in Nigeria today are, Tobechukwu Nwigwe popularly referred to as ‘Tobe Nwigwe’, Limoblaze, Wande, TB-One, Ami, S.O (Seun Otukpe), Shope, FC Beatz, Nolly.

Like i said christian rap has come to stay and the list is currently on the growth level as christian rap is still relatively new in Nigeria and its wealth is still very much untapped.
