MTN Nigeria launches eco-friendly SIM cards

MTN Nigeria announced the launch of paper-based, biodegradable SIM cards on Friday, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This move aligns with the company’s ambitious Project Zero initiative, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2040.

The new MTN Nigeria eco-friendly SIM cards offer an alternative to the traditional plastic-based ones, helping to cut down plastic waste and lessen environmental damage.

The cards, made from 100% biodegradable paper, will naturally decompose, thus addressing concerns over plastic pollution, a growing environmental challenge.

MTN’s initiative comes shortly after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealed plans for updated corporate governance codes that will include mandatory sustainability reporting for telecom companies.

By moving away from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic SIM cards, which contribute to global waste, MTN is leading by example in the telecom sector.

The company’s decision underscores its commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations while supporting local vendors in Nigeria.

In addition to being safer for the environment, the paper-based SIM cards lower carbon emissions associated with production and disposal.

MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, emphasized that this initiative forms part of the company’s broader strategy to minimize environmental impact and promote responsible waste management.

This eco-friendly shift also positions MTN among global telecom players that are taking concrete steps to reduce their environmental footprints by phasing out non-renewable plastic materials traditionally used in SIM card production.

As environmental consciousness grows worldwide, MTN’s biodegradable SIM cards reflect a forward-thinking approach, helping to tackle plastic waste and championing sustainability in Nigeria.
